JP Park Musical Fountain
The Jayaprakash Narayan Biodiversity Park, popularly known as JP Park is located at the junction of Jalahalli and Mathikere. The Park was opened in 2006 by the Chief Minister of the state of Karnataka, H.D. Kumaraswamy. The foundation stone was laid by a previous Chief Minister, Ramakrishna Hegde, but development was delayed and it was more than a decade before the project was completed. The park was developed by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) on an 85-acre (340,000 sq. m) site at Mathikere in the north-west area of Bangalore at a cost of Rs. 9 crores and is the biggest park in Bangalore after Lalbagh and Cubbon Park. The park has four lakes, lawns spread over 25 acres (100,000 sq. m), over 250 varieties of trees and shrubs can be found there all the time. Select exotic and aquatic species, and a nursery. There is a nature centre, an exhibition plaza, and an amphitheatre.
The park has three grooves called Pavithra Vana, which will have mini grooves called Nakshatra vana, Rashi Vana and Navagraha Vana. Apparently, each star in the zodiac constellation has a particular plant/tree ascribed to it. The groove would have plants of every star, rashi, planted.
The 4.5-km jogging track is abuzz with people every morning and evening. Under the mantaps which provide shade at various corners of the park, people participate in yoga, laughter clubs and other activities. The park also hosts blood donation drives, eye camps and diabetes camps. The park also entertains its visitors with a musical fountain, open to the public every Saturday and Sunday after 7 p.m.
Main attractions in the park are the two water bodies of 15 and nine acres each. The bigger lake has already attracted migratory birds like pond heron, coot hen, little cormorant, moore hen, pelicans etc. I had sighted one bird in this place.
