Vani Vilasa Sagara

Vani Vilasa Sagara or Mari Kanive is a dam in Hiriyur Taluk, Chitradurga District in Karnataka. It is located about 20km south-westerly to Hiriyur, 32km north-easterly to Hosadurga, 58km south-easterly to Holalkere, 50km northerly to Huliyar, 60 km southerly to Chitradurga, and 180km north-westerly to Bangalore. Distance from Bengaluru to Vani Vilasapura Dam, Karnataka is 181.4 km and travelling takes around 3 h 7 min via NH 48.

Vani Vilasa Sagara was built by the Mysore Maharajas pre-independence across the river Vedavathi. Vani Vilasa Sagara is the oldest dam in the state. The dam is an exquisite piece of architecture, an engineering marvel for that time. The dam irrigates a large area of the Deccan region of Central Karnataka, which is otherwise largely a dry land. It irrigates more than 100 kmĀ² of land in Hiriyur and Challakere taluks through right and left bank canals. Vani Vilasa Sagara dam is also the source of domestic water for Hiriyur and Chitradurga.

Sri Mari Kanive Temple

Sri Mari Kanive Temple (Mari Kamba, Kanive Maramma, Kanive Marakka) is located on the banks of River Vedavati where the famous Vani Vilasa Sagar Dam is built across it. The dam was built by the Mysore Maharajas during 1909 by a team led by 'Sir M Vishwesvaraya and Tara Vhand Dalal' at the order of his Highness the Maharaja of Mysore Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. The administrative boundary of the temple lies with the State of Karnataka under Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga District.

This historic temple was built during the Vijayanagar Rule around 14-15th Century. Since then on Andenavaru Kula/family of Kuchatiga Caste are the major stake holders of the Diety and Temple management. The Devi thereafter became the deity of this place offering her blessings to all who sought her. She poses with all her radiance along within her sitting in the padmahasana posture. The Goddess is believed to be a form of Sri Chamundeshari Devi. The abode comprises of Goddess Kanive Maramma in the centre, along with her two sisters sitting beside to her.
